The second and third tiers in the UPMC Kildare Hurling Championship took centre stage last weekend with seven games taking place around the county.
The second round of games in the Intermediate grade saw Leixlip establish themselves at the top of the table after they claimed a three point success over Naas with Kildare star Darragh Melville scoring 1-8 in a fully merited success.
Elsewhere Moorefield welcomed back Muiris Curtin into the fold after spending the summer playing in the USA and he was very much to the fore as he scored 1-2. Along with Conn Kehoe and Tommy Walsh also finding the net, the Moores took home the full points.
The last intermediate clash was closely fought throughout with Maynooth grabbing a 2-12 to 1-12 victory at the expense of Broadfordf as a goal in each half from Daniel Hever and Tadhg Forde got the North Kildare outfit over the line.
The Junior grade saw it’s first games take place with the return of both Athy and Rathangan to this level of hurling a huge positive for the county as a whole.
In Group A Athy fell to a heavy defeat against Round Towers with Robbie Byrne grabbing a hat-trick of goals for the Kildare Town side but in truth, just getting onto the field was a massive thing for Athy.
In Group B, Rathangan had better fortune as they ran 0ut 1-14 to 0-8 victors over Ros Glas on Monday evening with Brian Mullally grabbing the goal for the winners in an impressive display.
The other two games in the junior grade saw Divison 2 league finalsists Wolfe Tones continue their upward rise when three goals from Mark Kiernan helped them defeat Sarsfields. The other tie in Conneff Park was a thrilling encounter as Kilcock claimed a local derby success over 14-man Cappagh with a goal in each half granting them an opening round success.
