Update 6 on Handball Leinsters

Anna still tops in Leinster

Kildare’s longtime star performer in the Ladies game, Anna Spence, served notice that she is still right up there with the best on the national and international scene when she convincingly overcame the highly rated Shauna Hilley in the Leinster Senior  Final in Coolboy on Saturday  11th February.
Having earlier in the week accounted for the experienced Patricia Doyle on a 21-6, 21-4 scoreline, Anna was clearly in the mood to make it a double over formidable Wicklow  opposition. Well-prepared and in excellent physical shape, Anna’s skill-set provided her with a range of shot options which the young Coolboy girl just could not match and  this versatility, together with her precise killing, gave her dominance throughout the first game  as she eased to a 21-4 victory. The second  game had taken on similar pattern with Anna moving smoothly and confidently to an 11-1 lead and looking set for a facile victory. However, a change of serve from Shauna brought her a few quick points and almost from nowhere she was  back into contention. With increasing confidence and power shooting she wiped out the deficit and moved to a 13-11 lead with the prospectof a tie-break game becoming becoming ever more likely. Anna was not to be denied however and her confidence in her own skills became very evident when she rattled off a string of excellent kill shots to regain the initiative and take the game  and the title on a score of 21-15.

Success for Anna was balanced by disappointment later in the day when Ellen O’Connor and Aileen Quinn went down to a heavy defeat against Kilkenny pair, Rachel Hogan and Maria Walshe in the Junior B Doubles Final  in Tinryland. The Leixlip girls could never raise their game and the Noresiders had no problems in inflicting a second final defeat on the same opposition having already beaten them at the same stage in 2011. The score on this occasion was 21-1; 21-5.
